Mooncake Festival

There are two things happening today. First, is my good friend convocation in UUM. I am happy for him and his girlfriend for completing the Master Degree in Business Administration. Today is also the mooncake festival. Some called that as Mid Autumn Festival which usually takes place around late September or early October where the moon is the fullest.

This is an important festival for the Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Vietnamese people. Traditionally, after the farmers completing their harvest in the autumn, the whole family will gather and enjoy the mid autumn full moon with mooncakes and carrying colourful lit lanterns.

Mooncake This mooncake was given by a friend of mine. Mooncake comes with many varieties. Generally, the thick filling is made from lotus seed paste filled by the salted duck egg yolks.

Lantern-1 During my childhood days, I used to play this lantern. It is made of wire frame with translucent colour papers. There were many varieties during the past and the popular ones are those animals from zodiac sign. Nowadays, many of the lanterns sold are made of plastic molded shapes(superheroes, Hello Kitty etc) and powered by battery. I personally prefer the original version using the candle as light source.

In Penang, there is a Lantern Festival event to be held in the esplanade today. I truly respect our Penang Chief Minister to promote such event and bring alive the tradition of all races to promote our multi races traditions and cultures.
