Laksa-Janggus-Kg-Perlis-Balik-Pulau-Penang

Laksa-janggus-balik-pulau-01
Today, my food exploration continues with the famous Laksa Janggus located at Kg Perlis in Balik Pulau, Penang.

Laksa-janggus-kg-perlis-balik-pulau This malay laksa stall is frequented by many Malays from the neighbourhood. Even Chinese and other races also come to experience this mouth watering laksa.

Laksa-janggus-balik-pulau You can choose the standard or the special at RM2.50 and RM3.50 respectively. The latter has slightly bigger serving and includes egg.

I would rate this laksa to be highly recommended and is on par with the famous Chinese Laksa in the Balik Pulau town. The stall opens everyday except Wednesday from 3.30pm to 7.30pm. Besides the laksa, they also serve other types of food such as the koay teow or bihun noodle soup as well as the fried banana.

Pisang-goreng-balik-pulau
This fried banana or commonly called as pisang goreng locally, is another popular delicacy in Laksa Janggus.

You may want to know how to get to this Laksa Janggus Balik Pulau. I was using the Jln Sg Pinang route from Balik Pulau town. There is a left turning to Jalan Bahru (Jalan Baru). Turn into this road and just follow the road that leads to Pulau Betong. You can see the Laksa Janggus stall on your left just beside the road before reaching Pulau Betong.

Moontree-47-Kopitiam-in-Penang-Heritage-House

Moontree-Penang
Rather than gooing for the usual brunch in Penang, I gave a try in one of the coffee shop in Georgetown. This coffee shop known as Moontree 47 is located along Jalan Muntri. What amazed me about Moontree 47 is the shop being part of the heritage houses in Penang. It is a nice place to laze around and enjoy the cozy atmosphere.

Souvlaki There are quite a selection of food menus and I took the Souvlaki as my main dish. Food is okay but I personally feel that the main attraction of this place is the old Chinese style architecture and its surroundings. So, why not give a try to this place while enjoying the heritage trails around Georgetown?

In near future, Moontree 47 will have homestay and I am sure that will attract many visitors.

My-dog-sheep-cow-and-rooster-encounter

Sometime back during the Chinese New Year in Feb, while visiting my family members, I took the opportunity to snap some interesting creatures around my hometown and my in laws house.

Beagle Don't be fooled by this cutie beagle look. He is actually my brother-in-law's pet and we called him Nickki. His eyes looked pitiful but that is his usual tactic to get our sympathy to allow him to go into the house. He is extremely greedy and for such reason, when we allow him to go into the house, the first thing he will do is running to the kitchen to search for food. This type of breed is extremely intelligent and having very sharp sense of smell surpassing some other dogs such as fox terrier. No wonder this dog is used to detect drugs smuggling. Nickki is about 4 years old now which equivalent to roughly 28 years old of a human being but still very playful at his age.

rooster In my hometown, I encountered this healthy looking rooster stood boldly on the greenery. This one was cackling for a while which left me wondering what on earth did the rooster cackling in the evening. Isn't it suppose to do that as part of the morning call. I guess the world is turning upside down and this rooster also got himself confused. Probably, he was trying to show off to the rest of the chickens.

Sheep
Not far from this rooster stood this dirty looking sheep. The rain just stopped and clearly showing this sheep completely drenched. Rearing such animal in the tropical hot and humid climate in Malaysia does not seem to make the cut. Nobody is going to buy the wool. Anyway, I found it interesting to look at this uncommon animal in my neighbourhood.

Cow-staring Adjacent to the sheep is this cow staring at me. I had to be cautious as she looked quite fierce and at any instances, may charge towards me. I found out that this cow is a friend to the sheep. No wonder she is staring at me while I was taking the photograph of the sheep probably thinking I was trying to harm her good friend.

Coincidently, all these four animals fall under the 12 Chinese zodiac animals.

1st-Malaysia-International-Guppy-and-Betta-Charity-Competition-Gurney-Plaza

Beige-Fighting-Fish
The 1st Malaysia International Guppy & Betta Charity Competition was held sometime back in June 2010 in Gurney Plaza, Penang. There were many varieties of Guppies and Bettas. The latter was my interest as I did rear some Bettas during my school days.

The fighting fish scientific name is Betta Splendens and usually live from 2 to 5 years in captivity. Male fighting fish exhibit a very strong colour and will expand its gills and fins when facing its rival. As its name called, the male fighting fish will fight against each other and sometime could be fatal. Nowadays, many Betta enthusiast rear this fish as pet for its boastful color and beauty. You can see a wide range of colours and fancy fin through selective breeding and imports.

Finding Peace

Kradan-01
This week has been really a rough week for me. There are few issues happening at work which are not my fault. It really piss me off but life is just like a long winding road and have to cope with it anyway. How I wish I am at the beach, just sitting there, enjoy the cool breeze and witness the rising morning sun.

KL trip 31 Dec 2009

Last week I went for a short shopping trip in KL. Places visited were Mid Valley, KLCC, Pavillion, The Curve and Ikea.

Nasi-Lemak-Nyonya-Colors

Kuih-Nyonya-Colors These were my lunch at Nyonya Colors, located at the Garden, Mid Valley. This food chain selling various Nyonya Kueh such as Kueh Lapis, Kueh Talam etc. That reminded me of my 2nd grand aunt whom I considered as my mother as she took care of me since I was born. She used to make delicious Mi Ku bun, Huat Kueh, Ti kueh, Kuih bangkit, Kuih kapit and many more. She is now staying in Bandar Sunway and I really miss her a lot. Sadly, this time I did not manage to see her due to some reasons but hopefully I can pay her a visit on my next trip to KL.

Christmas-doll

Christmas-doll-2 Christmas just passed but there were stalls still selling these scary and yet cute looking dolls.

Christmas-Pavillion This was the Christmas decoration at Pavillion on my second day in KL. Bought my first jeans at The Gap store with 30% discount. Loved it.

Sudanese-food-klcc At the later part of the day, I went to KLCC to grab some books in Kinokuniya and had an exotic dinner in Sudanese Restaurant. There are some similarities of this Sudanese food when compared to our Malay food. They served rendang, kangkung belacan etc. Picture above was just an appetizer while waiting for my main dish to arrive.

KLCC Here goes my KLCC shot at ISO800. It was drizzling and I managed to take a shot or two before heading back to the hotel.

The following morning, I made my way to Ikea to shop some household stuff before going back to Penang.

Ikea-lights I found these intriguing Ikea lights at the Ikea restaurant. I liked the lights emmitted from the end of each strand of the fibres.

My initial plan was to visit Ikea and have a nice dinner at the German restaurant located at the Curve on the New Year Eve but unfortunately it was fully booked. This time, I tried out the Bubba Gump restaurant at the Curve.

Bubba-Gump-Run This sign was used to call the waiter. Bubba Gump run means I do not need any service from the waiter.

Bubba-Gump-Stop Guess what does this mean? ....

Bubba-Gump-Cajun-Shrimp I ordered the Cajun shrimp for my lunch. It was simply finger licking good and if you love shrimp, this is the place to go.

Bubba-Gump-Decoration One of the decorations at the Bubba Gump. I really enjoyed the projection of country atmosphere in this restaurant. It was cozy and I definitely will visit this place again. How I wish that there is one in Penang....

My Belated Birthday Dinner 27 Nov 09

Happy birthday to me...(3X) ...Happy birthday to me. Hmmm...One year older now. My belated birthday dinner was at Hardrock Cafe Penang. I ordered a mixed beef and chicken fajita. The serving was really big and filling. After the dinner, we lazed around and enjoyed the night live band performed by local artist. It was quite a while since I last visited a pub or live band performance and this dinner was a memorable and refreshing one for me.

Hardrock-Penang-1 The LED and fiber optic lightings are really creative. The colour changes every few seconds...

Hardrock-Penang-Singers Legendary and famous singers..the Beetles, Bon Jovi, Rod Stewart etc

Hardrock-Penang-Fruit-Punch Ordered a fruit punch while waiting for the band to arrive at 10.30pm...

Hardrock-Penang-Live-band The local live band playing many latest chart songs....

Hardrock-Hotel-Penang Curious about how the hotel looks like, we made our way to the hotel. At the entrance, you can see the similar LED and fiber optic lightings well decorated on top of us.

Mooncake Festival

There are two things happening today. First, is my good friend convocation in UUM. I am happy for him and his girlfriend for completing the Master Degree in Business Administration. Today is also the mooncake festival. Some called that as Mid Autumn Festival which usually takes place around late September or early October where the moon is the fullest.

This is an important festival for the Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Vietnamese people. Traditionally, after the farmers completing their harvest in the autumn, the whole family will gather and enjoy the mid autumn full moon with mooncakes and carrying colourful lit lanterns.

Mooncake This mooncake was given by a friend of mine. Mooncake comes with many varieties. Generally, the thick filling is made from lotus seed paste filled by the salted duck egg yolks.

Lantern-1 During my childhood days, I used to play this lantern. It is made of wire frame with translucent colour papers. There were many varieties during the past and the popular ones are those animals from zodiac sign. Nowadays, many of the lanterns sold are made of plastic molded shapes(superheroes, Hello Kitty etc) and powered by battery. I personally prefer the original version using the candle as light source.

Dragon-Lantern Dragon Zodiac Lantern

Rabbit-Lantern Rabbit Zodiac Lantern

In Penang, there is a Lantern Festival event to be held in the esplanade today. I truly respect our Penang Chief Minister to promote such event and bring alive the tradition of all races to promote our multi races traditions and cultures.

Clove Hall Penang Stay

On 13 Sept, my girlfriend and I went for a night stay in the Clove Hall Penang. I've never heard about such a beautiful accommodation until a friend of mine introduced this place to us.

Clove-Hall-Penang-1

The living hall. This place provides a very relaxing and cosy atmosphere with old English style architecture.

It can be easily missed out due to its location and publicity. It has only 5 suites (Cinnamon, Cardamom, Saffron, Ginger & Clove suite). We stayed in the Ginger suite and were lucky to own the entire place as we were the only one checking in for the night stay.

The garden have many varieties of tropical plant species. I found this plant interesting which were planted along the pathway to my suite.

Clove-Hall-Pool-1
Clove Hall swimming pool is quite unique and great for portrait photography. This photo was taken from one of the suites balcony at Level 1.

Clove-Hall-Pool-2
This beautiful small pool is about a quarter of the Olympic pool length. It looks shallow but it is actually quite deep (5 to 6 ft depth).

In my opinion, the ginger suite is the best among all. The stone bath tub, wooden beam supporting the ceiling and the red stone flooring blended together to make the entire ginger suite so pleasant.

Stone-Bath-Tub-1 How I wish I can have such a big natural stone bath tub at home....Took about an hour to fill up the tub.

Ginger-Shampoo-Shower-Gel
The shower gel and shampoo smell like ginger too. Wondering whether other suites will have their own special shampoo and shower gel....

Other suites too have their own uniqeness. There are only two suites at ground level(Ginger and Clove suites) while the other three suites(Cardamon, Safron & Cinnamon) at Level 1 above the living hall. The Clove suite also has a nice bath tub with a small private garden beside it.

Other-Room-Suite-2 The Clove Suite

I certainly would recommend this place for couples who want privacy, quiet and enjoy the whole day in the suite. It is a good alternative to the hotels in Batu Feringgi. Though it is a bit pricy, it does offer a good environment to spend quality hours with love ones.
